Year 9 Pupils Embrace British Sign Language to Kickstart Child Development Studies
Back
In a heartwarming initiative, a group of Year 9 pupils at Charter Academy have taken their first steps towards studying Child Development Cambridge National next year by learning British Sign Language (BSL) during their breaks and lunchtimes. This inspiring effort is made possible by the dedication of an expert volunteer, who generously offers her time and expertise to teach the students.
The pupils, eager to make a difference in the lives of children with special educational needs, have shown remarkable enthusiasm and commitment. Their first session this week was filled with excitement as they learnt basic BSL signs, including "hello," "thank you," "please," and "friend." These foundational signs are not only practical but also pave the way for more complex communication skills.
Amara, one of the Year 9 pupils, shared her motivation for joining the BSL sessions:
"I want to support children with special educational needs and make sure they feel included and understood. Learning BSL is a step towards that goal."
Another pupil, Daisy, expressed her passion for teaching others how to sign:
"I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to communicate, and I want to help spread the knowledge of BSL. It's amazing to see how a few signs can make such a big difference."
The initiative has already begun to foster a sense of community and empathy among the students. By learning BSL, they are not only preparing for their future studies but also embracing the values of inclusivity and support for all children. Daisy DeMarco, our brilliant librarian who organised their first session, remarked on the pupils' progress: "It's incredible to see their dedication and the joy they find in learning. They are truly making a positive impact."
As the sessions continue, the Year 9 pupils are set to expand their BSL vocabulary and deepen their understanding of child development. Any pupil who wishes to learn British Sign Language can speak to Mrs DeMarco to see how they can take part in future sessions.
