This week, our Year 11 pupils took part in an inspiring UEA Get Set Workshop, designed to broaden horizons and open doors to exciting opportunities in higher education. The session focused on careers and study routes for those passionate about reading, writing, and communication—including pathways for writers, journalists, zoologists, historians, and many more.

Delivered in partnership with the University of East Anglia, the workshop aimed to myth-bust common misconceptions about university life, showcase the variety of courses available, and help pupils understand how their GCSE skills can lead to aspirational careers. Pupils engaged in interactive activities, heard from current university students, and explored how their summer mock results can shape their next steps.

One Year 11 pupil shared their excitement:

“I didn’t realise how many different careers start with a love of English. Today has really opened my eyes to the opportunities out there—I feel like my future just got bigger.”

Sean Powell, Senior Vice Principal, emphasised the importance of these collaborations:

“Working with local providers like UEA ensures our pupils have the best information to make informed choices. It’s about breaking down barriers, challenging myths, and showing that their aspirations are achievable.”

The workshop forms part of our school’s commitment to Gatsby Benchmarks and ensuring every pupil has access to high-quality careers education. For those who dream of writing the next bestseller, reporting global news, or studying the wonders of the natural world, the message was clear: your journey starts here.
