Norfolk Police Inspire Year 9 Pupils to Make Safe Choices
Back
Year 9 Pupils at Charter Academy recently took part in an inspiring session delivered by Paul Johnson from Norfolk Constabulary’s Children and Young People Team, reinforcing the school’s close partnership with local police to tackle issues affecting young people in our community.
The workshop, “Your Choice Matters”, was packed with interactive activities, myth-busting facts, and real-life scenarios designed to help pupils understand the law, challenge misconceptions, and learn how to keep themselves safe. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to safeguarding young people and creating positive opportunities—such as the exciting new Youth Café opened in St George’s Park, a safe space for young people to meet, relax, and access support.
Key Messages & Myth-Busting Facts
Carrying a knife can lead to up to 4 years in prison—even if it’s never used.
96% of young people do NOT carry knives—most young people make positive choices.
Carrying a knife for “protection” actually makes you more likely to be harmed.
The session also encouraged pupils to report concerns, whether about weapons, exploitation, or feeling unsafe, and highlighted anonymous helplines and the school’s safeguarding team as key sources of support.
Daisy, a Year 9 pupil, said:
“I didn’t realise how serious the law is about knives. I also learned that most people my age don’t carry them, which makes me feel safer. It’s good to know where to go for help if I’m worried about someone.”
Sean Powell, Senior Vice Principal, added:
“This session is vital for our pupils’ personal development. It gives them the knowledge and confidence to make safe choices and understand the risks of exploitation. Our partnership with Norfolk Constabulary, alongside initiatives like the new Youth Café in St George’s Park, shows our shared commitment to keeping young people safe and supported.”
