On Tuesday 20th January, Great Yarmouth Charter Academy athletes lit up the Norfolk Schools’ Cross Country Championships at Wymondham College, turning mud into medals. The championships serve as the county finals, with top‑12 finishes earning selection for the Anglian Schools Championships — and Charter delivered.

Our runners showed heart, grit and serious pace against the very best in Norfolk. In a standout afternoon for the school and town, two Charter athletes climbed the podium and secured their county vests for Anglian Schools, while teammates packed in determined, high‑placing finishes

Headline Results

Francesca Greenlees (Junior Girls) — 15th in 15:32; just three places outside automatic selection after a brave surge through the field.

Kayla Nurse (Junior Girls) — 26th in 16:23; a composed, team‑first performance in a stacked race.

Kayla Nurse (Junior Girls) was impressed with her 2nd performance after competing in the finals last year  “I loved hearing everyone’s cheers around the course — it kept me pushing on the hills. Seeing my teammates smash it today makes me proud to run for Great Yarmouth.”

Sam Long, Cross Country Coach & Event Organiser was proud and pleased to see the girls flourish, “This is what school sport is all about — ambition, resilience and togetherness. Our runners showed that when you prepare well and believe in each other, you can mix it with the best in the county. We’re excited for other Norfolk Schools and even more excited about the pathway this opens for our athletes.”

Why it matters

Cross country builds stamina, discipline and confidence — qualities our young people carry back into the classroom and out into the community. With county vests secured and near‑misses turning into motivation, the Charter squad has momentum heading into the regional stage. Congratulations to every runner who earned the right to compete at county level and to those who stepped onto the podium.
