Back
After a very impressive in-school competition two debate teams were selected to represent Charter Academy in the quarter finals at East Norfolk Sixth Form College on Friday 6th February.
Ten debate teams from five secondary schools in the Yarmouth area took part in a debating workshop led by Kelly Skendi and the East Norfolk Sixth Form College debate team students. Former Charter pupil Lucas Stankevicius who chaired some of the rounds and supported pupils from Charter during the day.
Just before lunch, the competitors were allocated opposition or proposition and given the motion ‘Fast fashion should be banned’.
Both Charter Academy teams won their quarter final rounds. Year 10 and 11 pupils Dylan Lu, Kamile Debesiunaite, and Isobel Tann were outstanding in their round and local councillor Andrew Grant said that this was one of the best performances by secondary school pupils that he had ever seen.
But it was the teamwork and rebuttal skills of Year 9 pupils Jasmine George, Sadiqa Stiles, and Lyvinia Nichols that won them a place in the semi-finals in the afternoon.
The girls went on to win their round and secure a well-earned place in the final to be held in Great Yarmouth Town Hall.
All quarter-finalist pupils have been invited to attend a trip to Parliament later in the year.
Good luck in the final Charter!
