Year 8 Discover the Wonders of Great Yarmouth Minster
Back
Year 8 Philosophy and Religion pupils enjoyed an unforgettable learning adventure this week as they stepped through the doors of Great Yarmouth Minster, the largest parish church in the town and one of Norfolk’s most historic buildings. The visit blended history, music, art, and hands‑on exploration, creating a day pupils described as “amazing,” “inspiring,” and “unlike any lesson we’ve ever had.”
From the moment they entered, pupils were struck by the sheer size and character of the Minster. Guided by knowledgeable staff, groups explored how the building has evolved over centuries, its role as a centre of worship, and how it continues to serve as a cornerstone of the community today.
One of the standout moments came when Joe, the Minster’s organist, demonstrated the power and complexity of the grand organ. His performance captivated pupils, especially when they were invited to join in a gospel-style rendition of This Little Light of Mine, complete with full organ accompaniment. The chance to perform inside such an iconic space created a memory that will stay with pupils for years.
The Reverend Jassica led pupils through the Minster’s story, from medieval roots to modern community work. She also opened the doors of the vestry, where pupils tried on clerical garments—much to their delight and explained how they’re used in different Christian traditions. The timing of the visit meant pupils could also enjoy the Easter Art Exhibition, which added colour to the afternoon.
A lively treasure-hunt-style exploration around the Minster helped pupils meet key staff, uncover lesser‑known features of the building, and deepen their understanding of how the Minster remains a living, active resource for local people. Pupils were especially interested to learn that the Minster opens its doors every Monday from 5–7pm, offering young people a warm drink, games, and supportive activities in a safe and welcoming space.
Reverend Jassica said:
“It was a joy to welcome Year 8. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and willingness to try everything—from singing to exploring the vestry—brought such life to the Minster. We’re excited to continue building this relationship with the school.”
Sean Powell, Senior Vice Principal, added:
“Strengthening our connection with the Minster matters. It is the largest venue in the town and a building whose religious character mirrors much of our own school’s history and values. This visit has helped pupils see that Great Yarmouth’s heritage is very much theirs too.”
