Year 9 Pupils Inspired by Hands-On Medical Apprenticeship Event at The Place
Back
Our Year 9 pupils from Great Yarmouth Charter Academy had an outstanding experience yesterday when they attended a medical apprenticeship event at The Place in Great Yarmouth.
From the first session onwards, pupils threw themselves into the experience with real energy and curiosity. Pupils embraced the chance to take part in practical diagnostic activities, explore medical equipment and learn more about the wide range of opportunities available in healthcare. Their enthusiasm was evident throughout the day, and the feedback afterwards showed just how much the event had captured their imagination. Pupils repeatedly highlighted the hands-on nature of the visit, the chance to use equipment for themselves and the opportunity to learn directly from people working in the sector.
A particular strength of the event was the way it brought careers education to life. Pupils were able to step beyond the classroom and experience something much closer to the real world of medicine and healthcare. They took part in practical tasks, asked thoughtful questions and engaged brilliantly with the sessions, showing maturity, focus and genuine interest as they worked through the activities. Feedback from the visit was overwhelmingly positive, with many pupils saying the diagnostic tasks were the highlight of the day and several explaining that the experience had increased their interest in pursuing a career in the medical field.
Photographs from the event captured pupils fully immersed in the practical activities, including taking temperature readings and working carefully with medical charts and equipment.
For many pupils, the event did more than simply provide an enjoyable day out, it opened doors. It gave them a clearer understanding of what a future in healthcare might look like and helped them see that these pathways are real, exciting and achievable.
One pupil said:
“I really enjoyed the trip because… we used the equipment and it was fun. I would definitely go again.”
Another reflected on the impact of the day, saying:
“This trip had further inspired me about pursuing my dreams.”
These comments capture exactly why opportunities like this matter so much. They show young people that their interests can develop into meaningful futures, and they give pupils the confidence to imagine themselves in professional environments that may once have felt distant or unfamiliar. That is why enrichment opportunities of this kind are so powerful: they do not just inform pupils; they inspire them.
Mrs Jones, who accompanied pupils to the event, praised the way they approached the day:
“I was incredibly proud of how enthusiastically our pupils embraced this opportunity. They approached every activity with curiosity, maturity and real determination to learn. It was wonderful to see them asking questions, supporting one another and engaging so positively with the practical tasks. The event clearly sparked ambition and gave pupils a valuable insight into what a future in healthcare could look like.”
The visit also demonstrated the importance of opening up high-quality opportunities beyond school, allowing pupils to explore different industries in authentic and memorable ways. Events like this can be transformative, especially when pupils are given the chance to experience a sector first-hand rather than simply hearing about it. We are delighted that our Year 9 pupils were able to take part in such a valuable event and so proud of the way they represented the school. Their enthusiasm, confidence and willingness to make the most of the day were a credit to Charter Academy. Most importantly, the event has helped nurture aspiration, raise ambition and remind pupils that exciting futures really are within reach.
