Great Yarmouth Charter Academy is teaming up with the Venetian Waterways, a popular public garden in the area. The partnership is aimed at promoting environmental conservation and providing volunteering opportunities for young people.

As part of the collaboration, 18 Year 9 pupils who are part of the school's volunteering club joined the Waterways gardening volunteering group. The students will work alongside experienced gardeners to weed, sow, mulch, prune, and tidy the public convenience at the Waterways.

The volunteering initiative aligns with the school's commitment to providing students with opportunities to give back to the community and make a positive impact. The project also contributes to the pupils' Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, which requires participants to complete a volunteering component.

Many of the pupils involved in the initiative have expressed their interest in ecology and the local climate, making the partnership a perfect opportunity for them to get involved in environmental conservation efforts. The students are enthusiastic about the prospect of working with the Waterways gardeners and learning new skills.

Sean Powell, the academy’s Senior Vice Principal who oversees pupil’s personal development said,

“The partnership between Great Yarmouth Charter Academy and the Venetian Waterways not only promotes environmental conservation but also supports the school's drive to develop young people's character, passion, attitude, and belief in themselves. By offering volunteering opportunities, we are encouraging our young people to take an active role in their community and make a positive impact. It ignites passion in them for a good cause and motivates them to pursue their interests in ecology and conservation. The pupils have plans to develop a space in school to grow plants, herbs, shrubs and vegetables which can be donated to local causes and used in the curriculum”

The Venetian Waterways, which was recently restored, is an important public space in Great Yarmouth. The garden attracts many visitors and is a crucial asset to the community. The partnership between the Waterways and Great Yarmouth Charter Academy is expected to improve the garden's appearance and contribute to its upkeep.

The collaboration is also expected to create a lasting relationship between the two organisations, with the potential for future initiatives that promote environmental conservation and community engagement. Our next event is Friday 19th April to rejuvenate the herb gardens that circle the boating lake in the northern part of the attraction.

The partnership highlights the importance of community involvement in environmental conservation efforts. By providing pupils with opportunities to get involved in environmental initiatives, Charter Academy promotes a culture of environmental responsibility and encourages the next generation to take an active role in shaping their community.
